[Goals] 10 Days In

Well, here we are. January 11, 2013. It's been about 10 days of actual practice for my goals. I said I'd use the blog to keep myself on task, so here's the first update for the year.

I mentioned the way I plan to attack my goals - little by little add in small, easy to track actions until they build up and help the goal come to fruition. This means I'm not attacking all goals all the time necessarily, but attacking small bits.

What goals have I started working on?

I like things like this entirely too much.

Physical
I haven't started doing much in the way of continuous exercise. However, I have started working on goal #4 - Be more conscious of food choices and eat healthier.
Doing what?
I've started with 2 tasks. To be more conscious of food choices, I've set a goal to record what I eat daily, or keep a food diary, if you will. To be more conscientious as well as healthier, I've also started "freezer cooking". I have a free ebook on freezer cooking - the basic idea is you spend a big chunk of time preparing all your meals for the month, and by doubling or quadrupling recipes you can make it easy to do that many meals. I have decided to do this on a weekly basis to start, and see how it goes.
How have I done?
Meh. I've been great with the freezer cooking, with nearly 2 full weeks under my belt. On the other hand, I was great for about 4 days recording what I eat and then it stopped. I find that my issue is I snack - and it's hard to remember the little quarter servings of 5 different things that I ate. I think the next goal in this category is less little snacks.

Family, Social, Spiritual, Career
I haven't done anything yet towards these goals, though just this week I added the family phone calls to my goal task list.

I like shopping way too much.

Financial
Three big things happening here as far as tasks - recording daily spending, no shopping until "shopping weekend" and sticking to a clothing budget. I didn't mention it in my goals but the biggest reason for this budgeting is because a) I had no accountability for it previously and couldn't tell how much I was spending or how often I was shopping and b) to pay down some debt by restricting spending.
Doing what?
I went through my pinterest wishlist and created an ordered list of the most important items, along with some other wishlist things. This will help me to more wisely spend my allotted $160/month.
How have I done?
Followed this pretty well so far! I've spent about $89 of my monthly budget (although some might go back - I placed an online order and needed to add stuff I wasn't sure I'd love to get free shipping. I refuse to pay an additional 20% on the price in shipping just because they don't carry something in store) and I haven't popped into any stores but once (damn you, Target!). I might break the rule this afternoon, for a specific reason - the best Goodwill in town (they're in a nicer part of town and get great stuff that they actually highlight on a separate rack) is right by my doctor's, where I'll be this afternoon. I never get down there so I might just have to pop in. So far so good, though! And I'm doing great keeping up with my spending spreadsheet, although it doesn't look so great. Some spending tweaks need to happen!

Education, Artistic, Attitude, Pleasure, Public Service
I haven't put any tasks towards these goals yet.

I like keeping stuff too much. Notice all the crap on the bed.

Home
In reading and following Gretchen Rubin's Happier at Home, the first chapter focuses on things. The main task I'm taking away from this is decluttering. This is going to take awhile, but I'm focusing on one small location at a time. I started with my desk and am proud of all the crap I threw away! I'm asking myself if each item is something useful or something I love, and if not, I'm getting rid of it. I'm super proud of myself for getting rid of a whole bunch of college mementos that I've been hanging on to for over 10 years!

How are your 2013 goals starting out?

[Clothing] The Wedding Dress

Sorry to single a group out, but I have a question to ask of the ladies who are married or have been married (even if you are no longer). It's a question about something near and dear to a fashionista's heart....her wedding dress.

I got married in 2009, and wore a gorgeous, beaded halter gown that cost me over $1,000. Since then, it has been hanging in my closet untouched. And I have no idea what to do with it.

I am so torn. I love my wedding gown. However. What I really want to do is get rid of it. I know I'll never wear it again. I know all it's doing is taking up a freaking ton of space in one of my closets. But I haven't been able to get rid of it. Why? Because I am scared that one day, maybe tomorrow or maybe 20 years from now, I desperately wish I hadn't.

What do I think is going to change? I have no idea. I don't have any illusions that a potential future daughter will ever want to wear it. (My mother's gown was long sleeves. No way was that even on my short list of ideas when I got married.) I am guessing my hesitation has to do with the fact that I am really good at creating emotional ties with items and while I don't feel like I have one now, this dress is a representation of something so monumental and a day so earth-shatteringly amazing that I would rather hang on to it than risk wishing I had.

A 2013 goal of mine for my home is less clutter. Right now, I feel this dress is clutter. And one woman's clutter is another woman's gold in some cases. I wonder...will I really miss it one day if I just sell it now, while it's still stylish and someone might still want it? Or perhaps even donate it?

So....I ask of you ladies...what did you do with your wedding dress once you got married? Did you regret it or do you think you made the right choice?

[Linkup] Trend of the Month

Today I'm participating in a linkup hosted by the lovely Marion! Her trend this month? Stripes!

This was perfect for me, since I love stripes and own more striped items than I care to admit. I had just recently (as in, last week) recreated an outfit from the amazing Sydne that involved stripes!

It was interesting how I got here. I had pinned this outfit last summer and when I decided to recreate it, I was certain that it was the color contrast of cobalt and white that drew me to it. My first recreation of the outfit had me wearing a non-striped cobalt tank under the white blazer - and I just didn't love it as much! It made me rethink what drew me to pin the outfit in the first place, and I swapped out the plain cobalt for a periwinkle stripe - and loved the result! Although, I don't think the jacket photographed well in the lighting (it looks shiny?).

Sydne's style here

The Outfit
Top: Walmart
Blazer: H&M (summer 2012)
Jeans: JCPenney
Shoes: Target (same, seen in my Christmas vlog)
Necklace: H&M (summer 2012)

I think I like Sydne's open toe heels better than my closed toe ones, but I wore this in January while she wore hers in August, so I think I can give myself a pass.

Happy Wednesday, ya'll!

[Vlog] Post-Christmas Sales!

Guys, can I just take a moment and be really, really honest here? I am loving vlogging. This isn't all that surprising, I guess, being that I teach for a living, and essentially vlogging uses a similar skill set. But for me, these are so much fun to do! I really hope you're enjoying my vlogs as much as I'm enjoying making them! I am definitely planning on doing one monthly, recapping my purchases for the month (since one of my goals is to spend wiser and with a very specific budget!).

Is there anything else you'd like to see a vlog about? Are you enjoying these or are you bored to tears? Honestly, I won't be offended if you're bored. Seriously. I teach classes where I watch people yawn for 8 hours. But if you are enjoying these, let me know what else I can vlog about and maybe I'll do more than one/month!

Today's vlog is the last of the Christmas-related vlogs I recorded. In this one, I've got some great deals from my post-Christmas shopping extravaganza to show off! Honestly, this is my favorite time of year to shop. I saved up extra dolares solely so I can go a little crazy with the post-holiday goodies!!

I know it's a bit long, but I hope you enjoyed this one! Happy Monday!

[OOTD] Phone-tos and Goals

See what I did up there? At least I make myself giggle.

I have a few outfit photos to share that I snapped with my phone over the holidays. I haven't been able to do outfit photos for a few weeks because the holidays have been so busy - plus, as many of us bloggers have been whining about, it gets dark so much earlier it's difficult to find a time when you can get good lighting for pictures!

Sweater: Macy's, last seen here | Jeans: True Religion via Alexis Suitcase | Boots: ShoeLand, last seen here

Tee: Christmas present from the hubs | Jeans: True Religion | Shoes: BonTon (2011)

(Note: I have no idea what jeans these are. This pic is too crappy and the coat too long for me to tell and I can't remember)  Coat: H&M (old) | Bag: Target | Scarf: Old Navy (recent) | Shoes: Target

I've been thinking a bit over the last couple of days about my goals. I put them in much clearer terms, and while I don't have specific tasks attached to them yet, I plan to do that as I go. In order to really try and reach these goals, I'm planning on writing a lot about them on this here blog. In 2013, this blog will share fashion and self improvement. Which I guess makes sense because this blog started as self improvement - giving me a reason to actually put myself together daily and wear things I'm proud of! I haven't determined yet how I'll do this mix, but we'll work through that as we go. I'm thinking either shared posts or separate posts...not sure yet.

Tee: Primark (UK) | Jacket: Target (found cheaper in store!) | Scarf: London street market | Pants: TJ Maxx | Boots: Payless

Shirt, Sweater, and Bag: Old Navy (sweater bought dirt cheap recently during 2012 post-Christmas haul!) | Jeans: Big Star via Alexis Suitcase | Boots: ShoeLand, same as above

Tank, Cardigan, and Bag: Old Navy | Jeans: ? (old) | Boots: ? (old) | Boot "socks": Steve Madden via TJ Maxx (these are not actually socks but just cuffs!) | Scarf: Target

So, without further ado, here are my written goals for 2013. Some are concrete, some are abstract, but all of them will have specific, measurable actions that I will take as I work towards them. I've added a few of those actions that I already am planning on in the list below.

Physical
  1. Run 15+ miles/week
  2. Lift weights 3x week
  3. Hit goal weight loss of 20 pounds
  4. Be more conscious of food choices; eat better and healthier

Family
  1. Go on more date nights
  2. Take Lexi for daily walks
  3. Call my parents once a week and my grandmother and in-laws once a month

  2. Spend more time with friends who live close

Spiritual

  2. Spend a little more time talking to God
  3. Listen to spiritual and inspirational podcasts

Career
  1. Learn professional level modules
  2. Pass professional level test
  3. Be able to teach at least 2 compression courses

Financial
  1. Stick to a clothing budget of $40/week and a beauty budget of $20/month (the beauty budget is for extras, like nail polish and makeup I don’t need, not things like shampoo and skincare!)
    • Make a list of items that I want – both general and specific – and decide order of importance.
  2. Only shop one weekend a month, and only thrift one day a month
  3. Keep track daily of where my money goes and aim for spending $0 as many days as possible

Education
  1. Complete photography class
  2. Work on Hindi weekly
  3. Complete Coursera courses

Artistic
  1. Continue to grow my blog
  2. Learn to take better pictures
  3. Complete at least one knitting project

Attitude
  1. Be less reactive
  2. Be less judgmental and more accepting
  3. Stop worrying about little things

Pleasure
  1. Take at least one trip
  2. Spend more time reading
  3. Spend more time listening to music
  4. Try new activities on the weekend
  5. Be more present

Public Service
  1. Volunteer
  2.  Perform random acts of kindness

Home
  1. Keep up with daily chores
  2. Follow Gretchen Rubin's Happier at Home
    • One chapter/month through September
  3. Declutter and organize my home

Lastly, in reading a blog post about resolutions, there were some great guidelines that I'll be using as I go:
What would make me happier?
What concrete actions would bring change?
Am I starting small enough?
How will I hold myself accountable?

I'm excited for what 2013 holds...here we go!

[Life] Happy 2013

2012 is over, and today begins 2013.

Last night we rung in the New Year at a local bar where we could walk ourselves home and not have to deal with the crazies on the road. It was a fun way to start off 2013!

However, this time of year is my least favorite - the holidays are done, and it feels like that exciting trip you've planned for is over and all you have left is a stuffed bear from the airport gift shop. I love the fall and I love the Christmas holiday, and so this slow build that's been happening since September comes to a very abrupt halt as the new year begins.

Then you have the cold. In many places, you're facing 2-3 months of cold, crappy weather, with little on the horizon to look forward to until the spring thaw. No big holidays, no days off from work unless you choose to take them, and not much to celebrate or get excited about.

But -

There's just something so fresh about a new year beginning. I always start the year with big plans - how I want to change, how I will be a better me this next year, what I want to accomplish. This year is no different, save the fact that now I have a blog and now I can jot them down to refer back to as the year passes.

There's so much promise in each January 1, and this year, I'd like to really make an effort in a number of different areas. No, not resolutions - to me, resolutions never seem to stick, and it's almost like we're not expected to follow through. So no resolutions. Instead, this year, I'm going to make a few very concrete, objective goals.

2013 Goals:

Put aside at least 2 hours/week to learn. There are so many things I've been wanting to learn over the years that I've bought books or study guides for but never pursued. This year, I am going to work on completing the photography course I purchased, begin to be serious about learning Hindi (my husband's first language and his family's), and keep up with the Coursera courses I'm signed up for.

Control my spending. I don't really know how else to phrase this, but what I'm trying for here is to be more deliberate about where my money goes. I think sometimes I love the thrill of a great deal, or I obsess over something I don't really need until I go out and get it. I need to be more mindful of spending money only on things I truly love. I'd also like to make more full price, quality purchases instead of a whole bunch of cheaper and lower quality items. This will happen with the institution of a very specific budget, and I am going to set a goal to mark off one "shopping weekend" each month, where I can spend said budget. One of my biggest issues is that I will make 1 or more shopping runs a week. I think I will get more satisfaction out of fewer shopping runs, with hopefully better returns.

Work on self improvement and good habits in small, distinct, and measurable chunks. Another one that's difficult to explain in a short, concise sentence. I love self improvement and the associated books, magazine articles, etc. But I tend to collect them and hang on to them and do nothing about them. So, this year, I would like to focus on a task/week, or a theme/month, in the self improvement realm. I have files on my computer of little self improvement habits that I'd like to try and implement. I have books. To start, I received Gretchen Rubin's Happier at Home for Christmas and I'm going to use that as a jump off point to change some habits in the new year.

Make a conscious effort to manage my daily chores. I have a daily chores list that only gets done some of the time. I use an app to keep track of what needs to be done, but when you miss a day or 5, the list just piles them all up. It's daunting to look at and it makes me not want to do any of them. Then the housework falls behind, and before I know it, our home is a mess. I want to make sure that on days where I'm super busy after work and don't have time for all my chores, that I'm crossing off the ones that aren't as important, and I'm making time for/purposefully moving to the next day the chores that are really important to get done.

Purge clutter. I am a packrat. A terrible packrat. I want to take a specific room/closet/area each month and focus on getting rid of anything that I don't love or that doesn't hold a good bit of sentimental value. This kind of goes hand in hand with the above.

Work on being in the moment. I haven't quite figured out how to do this yet but I'm going to try. I spend too much time looking back or looking ahead and not enough time enjoying the present.

Do more things I love in place of things I "have to" do. I sometimes find that I feel guilty when I sit down a read a book because there are a million other things I "have to" be doing - folding that pile of laundry, clean up that mess on my desk, dusting the bedrooms. In 2013, I am going to make it a goal to spend at least one half hour a day doing something I really want to do - read a book, listen to music, go for a walk, have a coffee at Starbucks, play a game on my computer - without feeling guilty about it. If I'm better about some of the things listed above, this should fall right into place.

Over the next week I'm going to form some more solid ideas but I wanted to get my thoughts down first! I'll be sure to share with you my more defined goals in the coming weeks.
